Ensuring high indoor air quality in buildings involves controlling temperature, humidity, and the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and toxic gases such as NOx and H2S. Traditional materials like activated carbons and zeolites offer limited efficiency due to their lack of selectivity, competition with water, and energy-intensive regeneration processes. Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), a novel class of crystalline porous materials with remarkable chemical and structural diversity, have emerged as promising alternatives. Initially produced on a small scale, MOFs are now manufactured industrially and have demonstrated commercial potential in applications such as CO2 capture and direct air capture.
