The implementation of carbon sinks is crucial as a mechanism to reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. For Repsol's goal of achieving net zero emissions, it is necessary not only to reduce CO2 emissions, but also to eliminate and permanently store existing CO2 in the atmosphere.
Carbon sinks can be divided into three main groups: biological, technological and geochemical processes. Some CCUS are currently being developed and tested, but the further global climate action falls behind targets, the greater the negative emissions will have to be to reach our climate change goals. Thus, new carbon sinks need to be found.
