Technological solutions for enhance the value that the presence of electrical assets bring to the territory

Challenge:

The electrical grid is meant to be the physical backbone of the energy transitionand there are huge challenges related to its development, upgrading andmodernization.

Lineal infrastructures, as electrical one, are closely intertwined withthe territories they cross; while the digitalization and technology disruptionare allowing to minimize the need for new physical infrastructure in order toachieve economy decarbonization goals there should be necessary to keep theexisting and deploy new assets in the years to come.

In spite of the foregoing, those new technologies also possess thecapability to capitalize on the physical electrical assets in order to bringnew services and advantages to the nearby regions, populations and ecosystemswhere they are placed.  

Target:

Red Electrica, as part of Redeia holding, is the sole Spanish electrical Transmission and System Operator and as such responsible to develop, design,build and maintain the high voltage transmission grid in Spain https://www.ree.es/en/activities/grid-manager-and-transmission-agent

Redeia has a strong commitment with the regions where it is establishedand aspire not only to make them up for its infrastructure footprint but to goa step further and provide them with a net positive value.

Through this challenge, Redeia is looking forward to receiving ideas andproposals to explore how to bring positive impacts to the territory leveragingon the combination of new technological solutions with the features of the high voltage electrical assets.    

Recentexamples of innovative approaches to this challenge are:

- Use high voltage towers to installIoT devices for early detection of wild fires
- Study the potential of the electrical towers base as stepping stones to connect high value ecosystems inprotected natural areas
- Use of electrical towers to host 5Gantennas to help telecommunication operators with a cost-effective technicalsolution to provide 5G in remote areas (thanks to the access to power and fiberoptic as backhaul network)
